Farmers are warned this summer

The Health and Safety Executive have warned parents and farmers to be vigilant about the safety of children on farms.

With the holidays now under way, the HSE is stressing the importance of taking precautions to prevent accidents to children working on, or visiting farms this summer.

Farm yards are full of dangerous machinery and vehicles, and although most don’t realise it, an accident can happen very quickly and easily. Vehicles such as tractors and quad bikes are two of the main causes of fatal farm accidents. Sadly, three children have died from accidents involving agricultural transport in the last three months. Two of them were under the age of six.

Joanne Griffiths, Health and Safety expert for Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, commented “I would urge farmers to carry out appropriate assessments of their farms, whether or not they employ workers.”

She added, “The HSE has developed free interactive software to help farmers carry out health and safety assessments of their farms and to raise awareness in the industry.”
