Injured worker receives compensation
An abattoir worker, who nearly lost his left arm when he slipped and fell on the unguarded blades of a cutting tool, has settled his case. A negotiated settlement means Stephen Jones, 49 from Clun in South Shropshire will receive substantial damages having suffered life threatening injuries and, as a result of the accident which happened in February 2006, is now left disadvantaged on the open labour market.
Personal Injury specialist Dawn Humphries from Lanyon Bowdler said: “I am grateful to the NFU Mutual for the pragmatic approach taken with regards to this claim, it has meant we have been able to settle matters in a relatively short space of time and Mr Jones is now able to get on with his life as best he can.”
At first it was feared Mr Jones would lose his arm but thanks to the rapid response of Mercia Accident Rescue Service, the County Air Ambulance together with the experts at Selly Oak Hospital, where tissue grafting surgery was performed, it was saved. He has however, been left with significant residual symptoms in his left shoulder, elbow and hand.
Speaking after settlement of the matter, Mr Jones said “I would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported me through such a traumatic time. The doctors, nursing staff, rehabilitation team and my lawyers have all worked so hard for me, I am very grateful.”
Proceedings were commenced against the abattoir due to a breach of statutory duty under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.
