NHS Errors Highlighted by APIL

The Clinical Negligence Department at Shropshire Law firm Lanyon Bowdler have revealed some of the recent NHS errors, highlighted at the recent APIL clinical negligence conference.

Nearly 6,000 patients in England died or suffered serious harm due to clinical errors in the six months to March this year.

These findings, from the National Patient Safety Agency, were highlighted by APIL president John McQuater in his address to APIL’s sell-out clinical negligence conference. The NPSA said there were 459,500 safety incidents between October 2008 and March this year, which is the highest rate since records began.

At APIL’s conference, John drew parallels between the statistics and the latest report from the National Health Service Litigation Authority, which observed an increase in claims in the last year. APIL have said on many occasions the focus should be on avoiding such incidents and not simply complaining that these result in claims and costs.

Emma Broomfield, a solicitor from Lanyon Bowdler who specialises in Clinical Negligence claims, attended the APIL conference, which focussed on Obstetrics and Gynaecology commented "It was fascinating to hear from such a wealth of experts discussing a range of issues, including the concerning number of potentially preventable maternal deaths which occur each year, and the importance of good communication with patients throughout their treatment."
