Copyright Law in the UK
Under the terms of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988, a person infringes copyright if, without the permission of the copyright owner, they:
- Copy a copyright work.
- Issue copies of the copyright work to the public.
- Rent or lend the work to the public.
- Perform, show or play a copyright work in public.
- Communicate the work to the public.
- Make an adaptation of a copyright work or do any of the acts listed above in relation to an adaptation.
Copyright law is an extremely complex and confusing area of the law. If you are concerned that your rights have been in some way breached, or if you have been accused of breaking copyright law, it is advisable that you contact an experienced copyright lawyer as soon as possible to discuss the situation.
Penalties for Copyright Theft
In certain circumstances, infringing acts can also be criminal offences, and cases involving serious instances of copyright theft and infringement can carry heavy penalties. On conviction, the maximum punishment available to the court is ten years' imprisonment, with the potential to add an unlimited fine. More usual punishments following convictions for breaches of copyright law include 6 months imprisonment, a £5,000 fine, or both.
