The cathedral city of Hereford is the county town of Herefordshire. It has a population of almost 60,000 and lies on the River Wye, approximately 16 miles from the Welsh border.

Business Demographics

41% of the county’s population lives in Hereford itself, with three-quarters of those working in the city as well.

The public sector represents the largest employer in Hereford across services including healthcare, education and defence, while engineering and manufacturing represent a significant growth area presenting huge opportunities for the local economy.

The retail sector in Hereford has had a boost in recent years thanks to the £90 million investment in the Old Market leisure and retail complex. With leading high street brands, independent stores, a state-of-the-art cinema and a choice of restaurants, coffee shops and bars, the project created approximately 1,200 new jobs for the city and has been a catalyst for further significant investment in and around Hereford.

Office space within the city is at a premium with many professional services such as solicitors, accountants, architects and property agents based here. Skylon Park Enterprise Zone is addressing some of the demand for larger businesses and there are plans to bring about a new trade quarter for the town as part of Hereford’s ongoing regeneration to attract even more businesses and create additional jobs.

As part of the town’s rejuvenation, the delivery of the New Model in Technology and Engineering (NMiT) has had a high profile locally for equipping young people with key skills and encouraging their talent for the future, a project that Lanyon Bowdler is proud to support.

Culture and Social Scene

The abundance of restaurants, cafes and bars in Hereford are well served by the delicious local produce from the surrounding farms, of which there is no shortage. The ciders not bad either!

The Hereford Cider Museum explores the history of traditional cider making, for which Herefordshire is famed, while the Black and White House Museum transports visitors back in time to the Jacobean era within a beautifully preserved seventeenth-century timber-framed building.

Another iconic building in the city is, of course, the historic Hereford Cathedral which dates back to 1079. The Mappa Mundi, a medieval map dating from the thirteenth century, is housed here and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The Courtyard houses a 400-seat auditorium for theatrical performances, films, live screenings and other events and the Hereford Museum and Art Gallery exhibits artefacts and fine and decorative art connected with the local area.

Just down the road in Hay-on-Wye, between Hereford and Brecon, is the location for the world-famous Hay Festival, a 10-day celebration of literature held each May to June and designed to educate, inspire and entertain. The festival welcomes around 250,000 visitors each year and among legendary names to have attended are former US President, Bill Clinton and the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall.

Legal Services and Cases in Hereford

The agricultural landscape surrounding Hereford means that legal services in the area can be quite specialist, addressing issues specific to the industry such as farming rights, product liability, land ownership and pesticide use.

Other ongoing cases in the local area include planning issues surrounding new homes and the proposed Hereford bypass for example, as well personal injury claims due to dangerous working environments.
