Eight Million for Young Adult Affected by Arterial Ischaemic Stroke

Published on 23 May 2025

We have successfully settled a claim for a young adult who had developed meningitis at 10 days old following their premature birth.

This caused an arterial ischaemic stroke resulting in cerebral palsy, right sided hemiplegia, epilepsy and cognitive impairment.

The medical issues were very complex but we successfully negotiated a liability settlement in 2020 shortly before trial in relation to an alleged delay in diagnosing and treating the meningitis, despite a robust denial of liability by the hospital Trust.

We were then able to obtain substantial interim payments enabling our client to undergo extensive rehabilitation and therapy and to move into adapted accommodation with a care support package which has significantly increased their independence and improved their quality of life.

As a result of extensive quantum investigations and securing evidence demonstrating complex needs for ongoing care and support, we were able to negotiate a final settlement of the claim by way of a lump sum and periodical payments. The settlement has a capitalised value of £8 million and will ensure that our client’s lifetime needs are met.

The work completed with J has been complex but incredibly rewarding. From our initial introduction to J through to settlement, J learned a great deal about himself and how to manage with a support team, orthotics, therapeutic strategies, and equipment. Post-settlement, he has gradually transitioned into adapted accommodation, and together with his family, we have seen J thrive.
