The main high street is largely made up of independent retailers that serve both Bromyard and the surrounding rural areas, playing a key role in the local economy. Retail is the largest employer of residents in Bromyard, with approximately 15% of residents employed within the industry both in Bromyard and beyond. This is second only to the manufacturing industry, which is responsible for the employment of around 17% of local residents.

The tourism industry is also thriving in and around Bromyard with an array of Bed and Breakfasts, Guest Houses, Hotels and Self-Catering accommodation available for visitors who want to experience this beautiful part of the UK.

As a district rich in agriculture, farming also has a significant role to play in the local economy, and the area is particularly noted for its hop production, supplying breweries throughout the country.

Culture and Social Scene

Bromyard has a lively programme of events attracting thousands of visitors each year. With festivals for virtually every occasion celebrating everything from scarecrows and town criers to music and Christmas trees, it is no wonder that Bromyard is affectionately known as the ‘Town of Festivals’.

The Bromyard Gala, which is Herefordshire’s largest celebration of country pursuits and activities, is one of the most popular events in the borough’s calendar while the Bromyard Folk Festival is yet another cultural highlight showcasing the musical talents of both local and international acts. The town literally comes alive with songs for four days every September as pubs play host to a range of musicians and spontaneous music, the sounds of which spill out onto the surrounding streets. With the accompanying food stalls, craft market and a pop-up bar featuring real ales and ciders, it always promises to be a fun weekend.

The Conquest Theatre is a bustling hub for the arts in Bromyard, hosting a variety of plays, films, live screenings and exhibitions, while The Time Machine Museum is a haven of television and film science fiction, displaying items from pictures and series such as Star Wars, Thunderbirds and Doctor Who.
