Bus Passenger Accident Claim.

When you travel by bus or coach, you should be able to do so without fearing for your safety.

Most journeys pass without incident, which is why an accident can feel so sudden and unsettling. One moment you are simply making your way to work, school, an appointment or home again, and the next you may be dealing with injury, treatment and disruption you never saw coming. For some people, the effects are short term. For others, a bus or coach accident can have a much more lasting impact on health, confidence, work and everyday routine.

If you or a loved one has been injured while travelling on a bus or coach, it is natural to feel unsure about what to do next. You may also be facing practical worries about money, recovery and how long it will take for life to feel normal again. Where the accident happened because those responsible for your safety failed in their duties, a Bus Accident Claim can provide valuable support at a time when stability and reassurance matter most.

At Lanyon Bowdler, our Road Traffic Accident Solicitors have helped injured passengers and families across England and Wales, combining clear legal advice with the care and attention each case deserves. Recognised by Chambers UK and The Legal 500 for our personal injury expertise, we are here to help you understand your options and take the next step with confidence.

Can I Claim Compensation for my Coach or Bus Accident?

Coach operators have a legal responsibility to keep their passengers safe, whether by ensuring that drivers are properly trained, or that passengers are reminded to wear seatbelts. If they fail in this duty of care, resulting in an injury or even fatality among the passengers, then the injured passenger or their family has the right to make a claim for compensation.

Coach accidents can be serious, with sometimes tragic consequences, so it is only right that victims receive compensation for medical fees, loss of earnings and rehabilitation costs.

Your Coach & Bus Accident claim questions answered

What evidence do I need to show when making a bus accident claim?

Helpful evidence may include photographs, CCTV or dashcam footage, witness details, your bus ticket or journey information, medical records and proof of any financial losses. If the accident was reported to the driver, bus operator or police, those records may also be useful. Do not worry if you were unable to collect everything at the time, as we can help identify and obtain relevant evidence.

What if the accident was caused by another driver?

You may still be able to make a claim if another road user caused the accident. In these circumstances, the claim would usually be made against the responsible driver or their insurer rather than the bus operator. If the driver was uninsured or cannot be traced, it may still be possible to seek compensation through the Motor Insurers’ Bureau.

How do I prove negligence in a bus accident claim?

You will usually need to show that the bus driver, operator or another road user failed to take reasonable care and that this caused your injury. Evidence such as CCTV, witness statements, police reports, vehicle records and medical notes can help establish what happened. We can review the circumstances and gather the evidence needed to support your claim.

How long will my bus accident claim take?

The timescale will depend on the circumstances of your case. A straightforward claim may settle within several months, while a more complex claim can take longer if responsibility is disputed or the full effect of your injuries is not yet clear. We will keep you informed throughout and make sure any settlement properly reflects your injuries and future needs.

Do bus drivers have a duty of care to passengers?

Yes. Bus and coach drivers must take reasonable care for the safety of their passengers, including when driving, stopping and allowing people to board or leave the vehicle. A claim may be possible if that duty was breached and you were injured as a result, although each case will depend on its own facts.

I was injured in a terrible accident whilst working on a farm, I was left with extensive injuries to my arm which impacted all aspects of my life including my ability to go back to work. Once I had instructed Lanyon Bowdler they instructed medical experts who were able to recommend rehabilitation for me which was arranged, and this meant that I could go back to work and start living independently again. They secured compensation of £45,000 and gave me all the advice and support I needed to accept the offer made.

M Griffin
Birmingham

After a horrible road traffic accident I was left with minimal physical injuries but a significant psychological injury which affected all aspects of my life including my ability to go back to work.  Lanyon Bowdler handled my claim whilst also securing crucial rehabilitation for me.  They secured £85,000 in compensation for me just after a year after my accident.

Matthew Woodward

After a serious motorbike accident in which my Dad sustained significant head and life changing injuries I instructed Lanyon Bowdler to assist me with making a claim on his behalf. As part of his claim they ensured that he received an appropriate care package to support him in living independently and access to appropriate rehabilitation. They secured for him a settlement of £3.1m together with PPOs for his care and case management for the rest of his life which means that all of his needs can be met.

Rachel Dodwell
Community Case Management Services Ltd

As a case manager I work closely with litigation teams to ensure our clients get the expertise, support and care they need to bring them back to as close to their life pre-injury as possible. This is very often not an easy journey, and balancing the desires of the client to live their best life with collating and presenting the facts of how that life is altered, can be very challenging. Having worked alongside Lanyon Bowdler’s team for many years, I have noted it is always easier to strike this balance, when they are involved.

Shelley Lewis
AJ Case Management

Having worked with a succession of personal injury specialists at Lanyon Bowdler over the years, I have seen at first hand the top-flight legal expertise that they bring to every case and the commitment to obtaining the absolutely best result for every client. Equally importantly, I am struck by the compassion, empathy and humanity with which every client is treated. They go above and beyond to ensure their clients receive the very best representation.

Anthony Reddiford

The team at Lanyon Bowdler show an exceptional knowledge and understanding of their client’s needs, not just in terms of the claim that they lead, but also the emotional and personal experiences that they will have on that journey.

Jenny Whittall
JMW Ltd

Lanyon Bowdler provide seamless ongoing emotional support, information and guidance to their clients over what may be many years of a PI claim. This significantly helps mitigate the “stress” of a claim for their clients, and in my medicolegal experience puts them way ahead of other legal firms.

Professor Tony Elliott
Director UK Centre for Medico-Legal Studies

Contacted Lanyon Bowdler six months after an injury at work. They offered me several of their services, including no win no fee which I ended up choosing. The solicitor was extremely helpful, was always keeping me updated when there was news and answered promptly when asked for any updates or when I asked any questions. I was very happy with the final settlement and the advice I received proved to be the best for my case. I felt like the extra bit of care was extended to give me a good idea of the options I had to choose from which really helped to inform any decision.
