GP Negligence Compensation Claims.

Our expert GP Negligence Solicitors are here to help you get compensation if you have suffered because of the negligence of a General Practitioner.

When we turn to a GP, we place our trust in someone who we expect to listen carefully and act in our best interests. Whether it involves the early signs of illness or the management of a long-term condition, your GP plays a vital role in maintaining your health and wellbeing. While most GPs offer a high standard of care, there are times when mistakes in diagnosis, treatment, or follow-up lead to serious consequences that could have been avoided.

If you or a loved one has suffered harm as a result of substandard care from a GP, you may be entitled to claim compensation. We understand that considering legal action is rarely a straightforward decision. It often follows a period of distress, uncertainty, and unanswered questions.

At Lanyon Bowdler, we are here to help you make sense of what has happened. Our nationally recognised team of medical negligence solicitors is known for combining legal excellence with genuine compassion. We take the time to listen to your story, explain your options clearly, and provide the expert guidance you need to move forward with confidence.

With Lanyon Bowdler, you will have a dedicated team on your side, committed to helping you find answers, achieve justice, and access the support you deserve.

Your GP Negligence questions answered

What is GP negligence?

GP negligence occurs when a General Practitioner provides substandard care that leads to a patient suffering avoidable harm. This may involve:

  • Failing to diagnose a condition
  • Delays in diagnosis
  • Prescribing the wrong medication
  • Not acting on test results
  • Failing to refer a patient to a specialist

The consequences can range from short-term complications to life-changing injuries or, in the worst cases, death.

Can I make a claim if my GP failed to diagnose a serious illness?

Yes. A delayed or missed diagnosis can have serious consequences, particularly when conditions such as cancer, meningitis, heart disease or infections are involved. If earlier diagnosis and treatment would likely have led to a better outcome, you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation.

Is a GP allowed to prescribe the wrong medication?

All medications must be prescribed with care and in accordance with national guidelines. If a GP prescribes the wrong drug, incorrect dosage, or fails to check for drug interactions or allergies, this may constitute negligence. A wrong medication prescription can cause very serious consequences, and you may be eligible to claim for compensation if this has happened to you.

How do I know if my GP’s care was negligent?

To bring a successful claim, it must be shown that your GP breached their duty of care and that this breach caused you an injury. Our GP Negligence Solicitors will work with independent experts to determine whether the care you received was substandard and whether you have a viable claim.

What kind of compensation could I receive for GP negligence?

If your claim is successful, compensation may cover the physical and emotional impact of the negligence, as well as financial losses such as lost earnings, medical expenses, and the cost of future care. Every case is unique, and we take the time to ensure your claim reflects the full extent of your experience.

Is there a time limit for making a GP negligence claim?

Yes, most claims must be started within three years of the negligent act or from the date you became aware of the harm caused. However, there are exceptions, particularly for children or those lacking mental capacity. If you’re unsure whether you’re within time, our team can advise you.
