Good Divorce Week 2025 – there is another way.

As a proud member of Resolution, I’m delighted to support Good Divorce Week (10 - 14 November 2025), a national initiative promoting a more constructive approach to separation

Resolution is an organisation made up of more than 6,500 family justice professionals who are supporting people every day to find a better way.

This year’s theme, “Year of the Code,” celebrates Resolution’s Code of Practice, the foundation of good family law. It encourages communication, empathy, and solutions over conflict and blame whilst always keeping children’s best interests at heart.

Why this matters

Divorce is rarely straightforward. For many people, their only frame of reference comes from dramatic television portrayals or the media’s coverage of high-profile cases.

Being no stranger to media coverage herself, Kim Kardashian’s new legal drama, All’s Fair, has reignited conversations about divorce and the role of lawyers in high-stakes separations. This show promises glamour, strategy and courtroom drama. Whilst this might make for compelling television, it bears little resemblance to real life.

In reality, most couples want closure, stability, and fairness, not a fight. As family lawyers and Resolution members, we believe separation can be handled with dignity and respect.

For some couples, litigation may well be the only way for them to resolve their dispute, but far too many families going through separation end up in avoidable and acrimonious court proceedings.
Court should ideally be a last resort. There are a number of alternative paths that can be less stressful, more affordable, and far better for children.

The Resolution Code in Practice

The Code underpins how we work every day:

  • Putting children first, ensuring their welfare remains central to every decision
  • Encouraging open communication and avoiding inflammatory language and tactics
  • Exploring alternatives to court such as mediation or collaborative law
  • Choosing court only when necessary, given the high emotional and financial costs
  • Focusing on the future, not just the immediate dispute

Good Divorce Week reminds us that constructive separation isn’t about avoiding hard conversations, it’s about managing them well.

The value of early advice

Whilst Hollywood might dramatise the “scorched earth” approach, real life doesn’t have to follow that script. With court delays increasing, early specialist legal advice can make a real difference, helping you understand your rights, protect your finances, and support your children’s wellbeing from the start.
