My Work Experience: 14 – 18 July at Lanyon Bowdler by Lucy Malin.

Whilst studying law at university, I’ve always felt confident that I was on the right path but like many students, I wasn’t quite sure which area of law I’d be best suited to. That changed after a week at Lanyon Bowdler.

Through hands-on experience across five departments, I was able to explore a wide range of legal work, speak to passionate professionals, and get a real taste of what life is like in a busy and respected law firm. Most importantly, I left feeling inspired, supported, and more certain than ever that I’ve chosen the right career path.

On the first morning, I was naturally a little bit nervous, unsure of what the week would hold, or how much I’d be able to get involved. Those nerves didn’t last long. From the moment I was greeted and shown around, every single member of the Hereford office made me feel welcome. They took a genuine interest in my background and goals, encouraged me to ask questions, and made a clear effort to ensure I was getting the most out of my time there.

Private Client

I began the week in the Private Client Department with Georgina Hughes, who was so generous with her time, guidance, and insight. I was introduced to the processes around wills, probate, and powers of attorney, and saw just how much empathy and precision this area requires. It was a privilege to shadow Georgina and learn more about how solicitors balance legal expertise with compassion and client care.

Residential Property

I spent a day in the Residential Property Department with Steph Chandler, where I had the chance to review historic conveyancing files and follow the step-by-step legal procedures involved in buying and selling homes. This seat helped me appreciate the importance of organisation, communication, and accuracy, particularly when dealing with tight deadlines. It was fascinating to see how much work goes on behind the scenes to ensure such important transactions run smoothly.

Family

My time in the Family Department with Staci Robinson was another highlight. I had the opportunity to sit in on a client meeting, which gave me rare insight into the solicitor-client relationship in a sensitive and emotionally charged setting. I also completed research tasks on areas such as divorce, child arrangements, and financial settlements. Prior to this placement, I had assumed family law might not be for me but this experience completely changed my perspective. It helped me understand how emotionally intelligent, strategic, and rewarding this area of law can be, and it's now something I would seriously consider in the future.

Personal Injury

Before this placement, personal injury was a completely new area for me. I worked alongside Phillip Roberts, reviewing real case files and assessing potential damages. I was also introduced to the legal principles that underpin how compensation is calculated. What I found most interesting was how analytical yet human-focused this work is, helping people navigate difficult situations and secure the outcomes they deserve. This day really opened my eyes to a practice area I could genuinely see myself pursuing.

Medical Negligence

My final placement was in the Medical Negligence Department, working with Amy Bills, Alicia Johns, and Claudia Booth and it was one of my favourite parts of the week. Having studied medical law at university, I was excited to apply that knowledge in a practical context. I sat in on the team’s weekly meeting and then worked on a case file, drafted a witness statement, wrote a memo, and explored breach and causation in depth. I also really appreciated the team taking time to explain the maternity-related cases they work on, something that initially drew me to Lanyon Bowdler. This seat confirmed how much I enjoy working with complex, sensitive issues where the law can make a genuine difference in people's lives.

My week at Lanyon Bowdler was more than just work experience, it was a genuinely motivating and eye-opening opportunity. I felt supported, trusted, and included in meaningful tasks throughout. I’m especially thankful to the Hereford office for their warmth, encouragement, and for making the whole experience so memorable.

As I now head into my final year at university, I do so with a renewed sense of purpose, confidence, and clarity. With applications for training contracts on the horizon, I’m incredibly grateful that I now have a much clearer understanding of the sectors I’m passionate about, the kind of work that motivates me, and the values I want to align myself with in my future career.

If you're looking for experience, I honestly couldn't recommend Lanyon Bowdler enough. It’s the perfect place to learn, ask questions, and gain experience in a supportive, knowledgeable, and genuinely inspiring environment.
