My Work Experience 7 -10 June 2025 by Eve Carpenter.

Having just finished year 12, I have been looking at my post- sixth form options. Whilst visiting different universities and attending various talks and lectures, it was clear to me that I wanted to go into marketing or the legal sector, hence I completed my week of work experience with the marketing team at Lanyon Bowdler.

On my first day I was nervous, I hadn't met the team and I did not know at all what to expect. However, these nerves quickly went away when Amanda introduced me to the lovely marketing team here at LB. From there I felt very welcome, the team was most friendly and easily approachable whilst providing me with insightful tasks relating to their jobs.

I started my week completing a GDPR online learning course, including a knowledge check at the end. I learnt how GDPR is essential when working in marketing due to the sensitive information handled as a part of campaigns, but also how important it is to obtain informed consent. I found this an especially useful course to complete due to how applicable this is in everyday life and its significance in so many job sectors. I was also challenged to plan a charity fundraising event. This involved learning to use Canva, a programme I had never heard of or used before, to design both a poster and a social media post to advertise the event. I also had to research and draft a letter to local suitable venues to see if they could accommodate the event. Similarly, I wrote a mailshot and created a poster for an upcoming conference, this included details of the event but also the promotion of one of the guest speakers. This mailshot was then distributed to the mailing list of over 300 people.

I was also given tasks similar to those completed daily by the LB marketing team. This included a competitor analysis and SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) task, I quickly learned how this analysis helps businesses to decide their strategies and improve their overall competitive position. I also helped Holleigh to run errands, involving preparing and collecting marketing stock (such as banners) ahead of upcoming summer agricultural shows. We then produced social media content featuring Shrewsbury to help promote the firm for marketing and recruitment processes.

Whilst at the firm, I was lucky to help host a bake sale in support of what I now know to be one of many amazing local charities the firm is proud to support. I also produced a short article on the event, which is set to feature in the firms LinkedIn newsletter.

My week at Lanyon Bowdler was incredibly insightful. I was so lucky to be hosted by the wonderful Marketing Team who went out of their way to provide a meaningful experience- offering me a clear view of what it is like to work within their department at LB, while also regularly checking in on me to make sure I felt supported. I would particularly like to thank Holleigh McClay for all of the help and support she gave me throughout the week.
