As with other areas of medicine, the vast majority of ENT procedures go well and pose a very low risk to patients, but unfortunately there are occasions when things go wrong. Cases of medical negligence can take place during even the simplest of procedures, sometimes leading to debilitating and disfiguring injuries.
The types of injury which commonly result from ear, nose and throat surgery include:
- Damage to the vocal cord
- Facial nerve damage causing facial weakness
- Misdiagnosis and mistreatment of nose and sinus tumours
- Mistreatment of inner ear problems affecting balance and causing Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
- Poor diagnosis and management of neck or throat swellings and failure to diagnose tumours
- Thyroid disease
- Misdiagnosis of hearing problems leading to deafness
Ear, nose & throat (ENT) medical procedures
ENT, or otorhinolaryngology as it is also known, often overlaps with neurosurgery, plastic surgery and maxillofacial surgery. ENT consultants deal with problems like deafness and other inner ear problems, such as balance issues and tinnitus, as well as throat and neck cancer alongside a maxillofacial consultant.
However, the majority of ENT procedures are actually undertaken to improve a patient’s quality of life rather than being directly related to their health, such as:
- Obstructive sleep apnoea and snoring
- Ear surgery (pinnaplasty)
- Nasal surgery (rhinoplasty)
- Removal of minor nasal obstructions
- Balance problems
- Facial pain
- Tinnitus
By far the most common claims associated with ENT are for compensation following damage caused to the bones surrounding the eye skull during Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). A frequent complication of the operation is leaking of cerebral spinal fluid from the brain, which, if not successfully repaired, can lead to the permanent loss of the sense of smell, or even meningitis.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the face, neck, mouth and jaws. These include:
- Facial cosmetic surgery
- Cancers of the head and neck
- Trauma on the cranio-maxillofacial area
- Surgery on the craniofacial area for adults or children
Common treatments involve:
- Surgery for sleep apnoea
- Cosmetic surgery performed either on the neck or on the head, such as a nasal operation (rhinoplasty) or an operation to correct large or deformed ears (otoplasty).
- Cosmetic correction of the jaw (genioplasty)
- Reconstruction of facial symmetry
